It hadn't been terribly difficult to help Merlina disappear into the streets of Paris. Athos, not in need of money as d'Artagnan, Porthos, and Aramis were, lent the funds for the letting of a room in a house not far from the Garrison (he did, of course, give d'Artagnan a very telling lift of the brow when they'd talked about this, Porthos and Aramis sharing more than a few glances. Constance was not mentioned).
A kind of routine settled in, then, Musketeer duties, evenings spent with Merlina. It was not a bad life.
But a Musketeer's life wasn't predictable by any means. So it was that he galloped up to her boarding house one day, leaving Gaston at the door as he went looking for her. He only had a bit of time. "Merlina?" he asked, knocking on her door.
